Architect and Urban Designer Fanuel JC Chaane Motsepe’s 22 years in practice and research, include being a lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) – Johannesburg (2000-2004) whilst practicing and establishing “Motsepe Architects”. In 2008 he founded “Motsepe Architects Research Unit (MARU)” to institutionalise the research work of the projects produced by Motsepe Architects’ practice unit.
In 2009, MARU and the practice unit merged to become “Motsepe Architects Reseach Unit and Practice Unit Learning Apprenticeship (MARU a PULA)”. Motsepe often heads MARU a PULA’s respective research and design teams, who are equipped with cutting edge hard and software.
Since the company’s transitioning into a digital office, productivity is more seamless and has fast tracked delivery significantly. Collaborations with local and international practitioners and researchers has grown. Although the design and research teams all work from home, they are still well resourced with MARU a PULA’s soon to be online Africa-priority “Africa Built Environment Library (ABEL)”, project and specifile archives, an audio-visual room, and model-making studio.
Motsepe is currently primarily focused on philanthropic and private sector urbanisation projects of rural villages and “peri-urban” townships, which were historically reserved for South Africa’s black, coloured and Indian population groups, hence the unchanged township demographics.
Fanuel subscribes to a culture-adequate design philosophy for built environment doctrines and practices to unlock and advance the socio-economic opportunities of Sub-Saharan Africa’s marginalized people worldwide, as well as enhance lifestyles of emerging and established Pan-Africans worldwide. MARU a PULA applies this design philosophy through the concept of Botho/uBuntu, out of which MARU a PULA conceived its “Bana Pele (Children First)” design philosophy.
